In this snippet from his recent road trip from Colorado to Alaska and back, Kevin takes us on a whimsical  turf tour of the Sign Post Forest at Watson Lake, Yukon, Canada, one of the most famous landmarks along the Alaska Highway.

Travelers from around the world have been bringing signposts from their hometowns to the Sign Post Forest since 1942. The tradition began during the Alaska Highway Project in 1942, when U.S. soldier Carl K. Lindley spent time in Watson Lake recovering from an injury. A commanding officer asked him to repair and erect the directional signposts, and while completing the job, he added a sign that indicated the direction and mileage to his hometown of Danville, Illinois. Others followed suit, and the trend caught on. Today, there are over 77,000 signs in the Forest, and the number grows each year as visitors contribute signs and continue the tradition. The Town of Watson Lake maintains the site, adding more sign posts as they fill up.

While there, Kevin couldn't resist sticking a TurfNet decal on a vintage dozer that was used during the construction of the Alaska Highway. Fun stuff!

The Prairie Club and Sutton Bay Golf Club, located in the windy Great Plains, have near perfect records of preventing turf loss due to winter desiccation. How? By applying hydromulch as a protectant.

Kevin travels to Cheyenne, Wyoming to visit with long-time TurfNet member Ron Conard, CGCS, who has been managing the city-owned golf course there since 1997. Kevin and Ron chat about challenges in growing golf course turf in Wyoming, working for a municipal golf course, and shared interests in hiking and biking.

Kevin stopped by Olive Glenn Golf Club in Cody, Wyoming, to visit with an old friend, golf course superintendent Mike Kelly. 

An Oregon native, Mike's circuitous story in the industry began as a college golfer then assistant golf pro, shifted to the greens crew and liked it. Joined the army as a combat engineer and served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm, got married and had kids, went to school at Oregon State for turfgrass management (what til you hear the list of luminaries in his class at OSU!). 

Mike then worked his way from Eugene Country Club to Milwaukee CC, helped grow in Thunderhawk GC, then on to the supt's position at Edina Country Club for 8 years before shifting to a regional job with Bayer Environmental Science, During that time he and his wife visited Wyoming and said "let's go!".
